The nominees had to submit an overview/resume of their high school activities including Extracurricular activities, Honors and awards, Community activities, Hobbies, and Plans for the future. They also had to introduce themselves in front of everyone and answer questions from the judges. Of course they were all nervous about this part! Some of the kids answers were pretty entertaining, others were more serious. Ryan did a good job answering the questions he was given.
There were 50 participants in the pageant
Ryan's introduction: "Good Evening! I am Ryan West, the son of Kevin and Christine West. I am honored to have been selected as a Senior Spotlight for my class. I am a member of the National Honors Society, an AP Scholar with Honor, a graduate of the 2009 Troup Leadership program, and a member of the LaGrange High Service Club, having earned the "Top Service Hours Award" for 2010-2011.
I have been active in the Boy Scout program for many years, earning scouting's highest rank of Eagle.
After high school, I plan to Major in Engineering at Brigham Young University before pursuing a post graduate degree. "
At the end of the judging the principal, Mr. Cole, presented the Mr. and Miss Congeniality awards and then the runner's up to Mr. and Miss LHS. We were clapping away and enjoying the evening and then Mr. Cole announced the winners. Not that I didn't think he did a great job, but it never occurred to me that Ryan might be the winner. When Mr. Cole said " Mr. LHS- RYAN WEST" I looked at Kevin and said "Oh my word, I guess I'd better turn on the camera!" lol
We are proud of Ryan, and now know that the title Mr. & Miss LHS is one that is earned- not just a title given to the top athletes or preps in the school.
