Oh The Web We Weave....

While Bonnie & Bently were gone, their car was parked in our driveway. I discovered this beautiful HUGE web that was spun between the car & the trees that were about 8' away.
The spider was not on the when when I first saw it.

I really don't like spiders, but this web was so beautiful with the dew on it.

Very ugly spider!!!! At first we thought it might be a brown recluse. I looked it up on a bigger web--the world wide web, & learned more about them.
Characteristics of a Brown Recluse Spider-
  • Six eyes arranged in pairs, with one pair in front and a pair on either side.
  • A dark violin shape on the cephalothorax.
  • Uniformly light-colored legs - no stripes, no bands
  • Uniformly colored abdomen which can vary from cream to dark brown depending on what it has eaten, however, it will never have two colors of pigment at the same time.
  • No spines on the legs, only fine hairs
  • Recluses make small retreat webs behind objects, never out in the open.
  • It is about 3/8 of an inch in body length.
Glad to know this WAS NOT a brown recluse in our yard...doesn't mean they aren't there somewhere though.

I believe this is called an orbweaver. There ya have it...more than you ever wanted to know about spiders!! While his web was beautiful, I definitely think this spider was EEwww- creepy!!

wow, that is a huge web! Thanks for sharing. Eli always asks if spiders we see are named Charlotte. Then I have guilt about killing them :-(

My brothers once found a catface spider by the ceiling right by the front door one October a few years back. We came for a visit and as soon as Dave spotted it, he killed it. When we let my brothers know, they were distraut. It was the perfect Halloween decoration. Too bad yours is attached to the car that will most likely be moved before Halloween! You're right though, his web is pretty, but is NOT!

I have no guilt killing spiders. I had a hard time reading the post once the spider was in the picture.

I'm impressed how close Amy got to the web, unless it was all one cool optical illusion!!!
