Green Tomatoes Anyone?

My tomato plants grew beautifully in our new "square foot garden" this year.
YAY--I was so excited!!! :)

The plants were looking pretty sad by mid-Sept, but they were still loaded with green tomatoes.

(that's not actually a picture of MY garden I missed taking that picture)
I learned a new tip from my Mom about ripening green tomatoes. Instead of putting them on the windowsill to ripen she said to wrap them in newspaper.
I was a little skeptical at first, but I gave it a try, & discovered it really worked very well!!! Why should I have doubted my mother? Well, it wasn't really her I doubted--it was the fact that I might forget them when they were out of sight -ha.

You can still let them ripen on the windowsill, it’s just that the windowsill method is a bit slower than the wrapping way. Newspaper emits ethylene, the ripening hormone, so wrapped tomatoes just ripen faster.
A tip I learned last year was not to store tomatoes in the fridge because it makes them soft and mealy. (Notice they aren't refrigerated at the grocery store??) My mom also told me I could just wash the tomatoes and put them in freezer bags to freeze and use in chili and soups later. Wow, I didn't know it could be that easy!! I was excited about that, cause we couldn't keep up with eating all the ripe tomatoes, but it didn't seem like there were enough to get out all the canning stuff either.
Gee, I'm just full of helpful tips, aren't I? lol

Another tip--I cut my tomatoes in half and freeze them and when I need them I run them under water and the skin peels VERY easily off them. I read Amy's note and couldn't stop laughing...please remember what you did because I am sure that Camryn will be writing those letters sooner than later. The family looks great in all the wedding photos and I LOVE your dress from the wedding...you look GREAT! See you this week

You must be the favorite, mom didn't tell me that info. Oh wait, maybe it was because the only thing that grew was the potatoes.
