Yay or Yeah??

I'm sure there is someone out there in blog land that will be very anxious to answer my question. (because it's their pet peeve when someone spells it wrong).

Can you tell me the "rule" of when to spell my answer of jubilation as "Yeah!" or "Yay!"
I know when to use "yea" like it is used in the scriptures - "yea, verily".

I think"yeah" means yes, & "yay" is used to express excitement?
I know it's a funny thing to worry about, but I just don't want to look foolish forever! ha

I am guessing that Jack will be the first to answer my quandary. :)

At least in my mind...
"Yeah" or "ya" is like yes
"Yay" is like hooray

Yeah to me is hooray.
Ya is yes.

Apparently I'm in the minority here.

I'm so sorry to disappoint. I obviously don't check blogs frequently enough these days.
If you want to get technical, and I do, "yeah" is akin to "sure", "youbetcha", and/or "yepper". This word is pronounced like yam without the m. Yea and Yay are homonyms (they sound the same) but aren't pronounced the same as "yeah". I can see how people could easily get confused. "Yeah!" can mean "hooray", but only if you say it while giving a high five, fist pump, or good-game. It also works when you get a double Yahtzee.
"Yay!" means "hooray", "whoopie", "yippie", "woo-hoo" and many other things, but it never means yes.
Don't believe me? Ask the dishes.
