Goalie Boy

Ryan in 2003... isn't he so cute? Look at that form

Ryan plays on his high school JV soccer team. Last week the goalie quit, & one of the dad's recommended Ryan to the coach as a good goalie. He used to play goalie for his rec. league team, & did quite a good job at it, but that was at least 3 or 4 years ago. Since that time, Ryan has grown about a foot taller, but hasn't put much meat on his bones.
(I started this post a week ago hoping to take pictures of Ryan at practice. They are yet to come)
Last night, like the preceeding several nights, he came home from practice covered in mud, badly bruised, and scratched up. He had dirt in his eyes, which didn't make for a good combination with contact lenses! This morning his eyes were so red I was afraid he might have pink-eye, but we determined it was likely just caused by the irritation with his contacts.
OUCH!!!

How fun can that be to dive onto the rock-hard ground without padding? We want him to do this because HE wants to, not because he thinks he has to or the team won't have a goalie. It's hard to know whether to encourage him to continue when he is hurting so badly. He wasn't getting any playing time on the field, so this will defenitely give him some action!

Being a goalie really takes a certain kind of personality. I was talking to a couple of friends about this and one asked if Ryan is tough, self-assurred & cocky (her perception of soccer goalies). He certainly is not cocky, but he is a kid who really works hard at whatever he sets his mind to doing. I could say he "dives in" and tackles what he wants to learn how to do. :) Well diving he will certainly need to do as goalie!! I hope he can stay tough when they might be loosing the game, & not feel like it's all his fault if the other team scores on him. It's the defenders job to keep that ball as far away from the goal as they can. There is another boy who is a hockey goalie who is going to start practicing with Ryan to be a soccer goalie too. Won't he be shocked to hit the ground without his big hockey pads?

We're proud of Ryan, but it sure is tough to watch your "little boy" get hurt!

Wish me luck sitting calmly in the bleachers for the rest of the season.

Aww, those first pictures of him are precious! He was so cute! He is still so cute, just in a more grown up way. I am excited to see more recent pictures of him playing soccer.

I would hate to be goalie and I would probably quit if they told me that was the position I had to play. Way to stick in there and give it your best Ryan!

It must be hard playing the mom of the goalie!
