The first weekend in October is always one I look forward to. In LaGrange there are no lack of activities to choose from. There's the Junior Service League Attic sale, kids soccer games, friends birthday parties, "The Cotton Pickin' Fair", a Vintage Car Rally, the Antique Car Club's annual car show at Callaway Gardens, Cans for Cash kick-off carnival on the square, & likely several other things I don't know about. All of those things are exciting, but the one thing that I look forward to is something that most of LaGrange isn't even aware of-- It's the Semi-Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, broadcast from Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. 21,000 church members gathered together in the conference center and millions of others worldwide watched the conference on tv, the internet, and via satellite. There are two, two hour sessions on Saturday and Sunday. How could I be excited about sitting through 8 hours of "church" on a weekend?-- Listening to President Monson and the other general authorities is such an uplifting experience. I know they pray about what they should speak about, and there is something I learn from every talk--some way I can work to draw closer to the Savior and improve my life.
Ever since my days as a student at BYU I have taken notes during conference. It helps me listen more intently, and highlight the points in the talks that stick out to me. I'd like to say that I have always been good at going back through the talks when they are published in the Ensign the month following conference, & comparing my notes and studying the messages again. Some years I have been better at this than others. I defenitely start out well, & have good intentions!
This time I am setting a goal to use the conference talks as a basis for our family home evenings. If we can discuss what we are being asked to do, & then set goals together as to how we'll accomplish those things I know we will be blessed. I love that I can go back and watch all the talks on the internet.

that's a great idea Chris.
I agree with your Family Home Evening Idea. That is a sure way to bring blessings to your Home and Family. I think my kids are a bit on the young side, so I want to read them with Dave. Maybe we can share highlights with the kids after. :) Thanks for your inspiration.
