Paint The Town

From Wednesday through Saturday last week, 15 volunteer teams in LaGrange participated in a project called "Paint The Town". Since a friend of mine was in charge of the project, & I kept hearing her say she needed more teams, I told her I would try to get enough people from our Branch to commit to paint a house.

Following the counsel of our church leaders who have encouraged us to " help bring the church out of obscurity", a good number of our Branch members enthusiastically agreed that we could tackle the challenge.

The house we were assigned to was built in 1911. There was a lot to be done! The house needed some serious pressure washing, and a lot of scraping. Several windows were broken and needed replacing, and of course, the house needed painting.

This view of the front of the house doesn't really make it look so bad...
Don't be deceived

Every day I went back over to the house, it seemed bigger. ;)

The lady who owns the home LOVES plants. They were EVERYWHERE!!
Fortunately, she was good about cutting back the plants and flowers that were overgrown and touching the house. There was no way we could have gotten in there to paint if she hadn't done that first! She felt so good about the work she did cleaning up her yard too. This project gave her the encouragement she needed to tackle some much needed things she could do herself too.

The organization called "DASH" (Dependable, Affordable, Sustainable, Housing)
pays for all of the paint and up to $200.00 in repairs for the home. It is an awesome program for people that really can't do the work themselves or afford to do it. All they had to do is apply and qualify with the "need", then they were interviewed and 15 homeowners were selected this year. Last year there were more funds, and 30 homes were painted!

Our homeowner chose to change her paint color to "Aqua Mist".
She loved it...and that's what matters!! :)

Some of our team members
Kevin & Amy hard at work
Ryan worked hard every day and put in over 30 hours of service

One VERY HAPPY, PROUD homeowner!!

What a HUGE DIFFERENCE, eh?
It was great to be able to work hard and know that what we were doing would make a huge difference in Diane's life. She was very appreciative of all the help she received. Her two grandsons that live with her helped with some of the scraping the first day, & then they helped with cleaning some of the windows, and raking up the paint chips when we were finished painting.
Oh...just thought I'd show you a little bonus to our service project days...Diane's grandson's girlfriend backed into my van. :) FORTUNATELY she has insurance. I guess it was part of being blessed for doing the service. I didn't get the least bit upset!! I don't think that came out right...I meant it was a blessing that she had insurance, & that I didn't get upset at all.

That's really cool. Wish I could have helped! The finished product looks great! How was she chosen to have her house done?

Yikes, that's quite the dent on the van!

Nice dent.
The paint color isn't so bad once the whole house was done. It does look very drastic going over the light color though.
